English: The machine was designed by Leonardo to make concave mirrors. When operated, the vertical grinding wheel moves in a circular motion and, thanks to a combination of gearwheels, it also transmits this motion to the base on which a mirror is placed, which takes on a concave shape as it rotates.
At the time, concave mirrors were used to concentrate the sun's energy and its heat, making it easier to weld large surfaces. Indeed, the welds used to make the Santa Maria del Fiore sphere aroused great curiosity at the time. Leonardo carried out studies and experiments on parabolic mirrors, believing that they could be used to produce and store energy.
