Endormi dans la petite chapelle, Dagobert voit en songe les trois saints : Denis au centre en vêtement épiscopaux et ses deux compagnons Rustique et Éleuthère. Les trois arcades symbolisent la Jérusalem céleste (le Paradis), séjour des trois saints et modèle de toutes les églises terrestres, parmi lesquels la basilique de Saint-Denis que le prince promet à cet instant de faire reconstruire. Il remercie ainsi saint Denis de la protection qui lui a été accordée. Dagobert est en adoration et va toucher le sol du front pour baiser les pieds du saint. Le contraste ciel/terre, saints/roi est souligné par la différence de taille des personnages qui correspond à leurs mérites respectifs aux yeux de Dieu. C'est pourquoi Dagobert, bien que roi, est tout petit. L'enlumineur, Ingelardus, a indiqué son nom vers la fin du manuscrit et celui de son commanditaire, l'abbé Adalard.
