Summary edit

Description

Looking north from the North Shore Scenic Railroad.

This is just south of the Amity Creek-Lester River confluence.

The iced tea color of the water is due to the presence of tannins (= organic compounds derived from plants).

The rocks are basalts of the North Shore Volcanic Series (late Mesoproterozoic, 1.1 Ga). These basalt lava flows filled up an ancient rift valley (= Lake Superior segment of the Mid-Continent Rift System), representing a tear in the ancient North American paleocontinent of Laurentia.

Locality: southern side of Superior Street in the town of Lester Park, northeast of the city of Duluth, North Shore of Lake Superior, southeastern St. Louis County, northeastern Minnesota, USA
