English: "...erected. But on nearing it found two instead of one both deserted. One of 9 guns was spiked immediately and then turned our attention to other. Found 27 guns under cover of woods extending several hundred yards, in front of rifle pits and strong entrenchments. These guns were also deserted the Rebels fleeing in all directions. They had evidently been constructed for opposing "Foote" coming down river and were not prepared for an assault coming up. Guns most of which were 8 inch columbiads would have done great execution had they fought. Anchored for the night and came down to City next morning, seizing 4 steamers and hoisting Stars and Stripes. Rebel steamer "McRae" come up from Fort Jackson about noon Sunday for purpose of burying dead and bringing wounded. She afterwards sank from many injuries received night of engagement. The two forts surrendered on Monday morning and Gen Butler manned them with Yankee troops. All the prisoners with exception of few officers were liberated on taking oath. Tuesday April 29 detachments of marines from squadron went on shore hoisted Stars and Stripes over custom house and pulling down Secession flag on City Hall. I was along and pretty glad was I when on ship board again. People blackguarding us every inch and much as "foreign legion" the guard of the city could do to keep quiet and order. Yesterday the "Brooklyn" guard were sent on shore to protect the flag and post office and I was with them. Our crowd numbering only 20 men moved very cautiously up the street but..."
