Description
English: "...place on the field of battle. Peace to their ashes, they responded to their country's call and fell a noble sacrifice. Do you ever mail any Salem papers to me? I have yet the first one to receive. If you have, I suppose they have been taken by others. The Northern papers give a high percentage for gold and silver, expect "shinplasters" are pretty much in the fashion around Salem.

It is almost an impossibility to get a treasury note changed here, unless you expend almost the half of it. Quite a number of our men were on liberty last week and came on board with their bills unbroken which is a thing that seldom occurs. How is the fruit this season? Did the peach crop answer expectations? It would not set me back a bit, for this ship to go home for repairs about the time grapes are ripe as I might avail myself of a few days liberty and make you a call, but I harbor no such idea. The health of this ship continues remarkably good. We hear the yellow fever is pretty bad at Key West and Havana. I am looking for a letter from Aunt Mary next mail as I wrote same time I mentioned writing to Salem. Have any of the family visited the City this summer? Do you ever hear from Bristol, and when did you hear from Uncle Bee's..."
