English: "...in good humor. It was really fun to see, mess chests, mess pans & kettles rolling from side to side. Someone would try to walk forward or aft & might perhaps go half dozen steps when his feet would go from under and away he would roll from side to side.
You must remember that we have to lay out at sea when on the blockade and have no place to run into for shelter in case of storm. At noon we changed position and ship appeared to be more steady for a time. Towards night it became apparent that we were going to experience a hard time. 11 P.M. sea was rolling tremendous and night pitchy dark. Three of our guns became loose and commenced rolling, how our case became to be feared. If any one should get between guns and side of ship at such a time he would..." From the Charles H.
