Summary edit

Description
English: "Boat “South Carolina” and put in irons. The whole number of shots fired were 51, and most of them from Nine Inch Guns. . . . Steamers name [is] the “Magnolia” bound from New Orleans to Liverpool. Vessel and cargo valued at $200,000—so that our first prize is not so small.

We came back soon after putting a Prize Crew on board and are now at our old station mouth of the Mississippi. Nearly every day can be seen from two to three Rebel Vessels inside the Pass evidently awaiting a chance to come out but I imagine they dare not make the attempt too many of Uncle Sam's Muzzles in the way. My idea is, the "Magnolia" known to be a fast boat was sent out so as to lead us after her and allow more to escape but in this they failed.

The storeship "Nightingale" came in night before last with coal for us consequence is today any quantity of coal dust flying around. Time passes away quite pleasantly plenty of amusement and always being ready for an engagement lends an extra charm to the dull monotony of Man of War Life. There is some talk of a battering ram coming down from New Orleans to attack us but I place little confidence in the report.

If this should happen to come a few days late you can make the allowance that letters have to be ready some days beforehand so to be resent on board..."
