Summary edit
DescriptionLeucophora obtusa ♂, Parc de Woluwé, Bruxelles (49707659748).jpg |
Anthomyiid flies of the genus Leucophora are also known as "satellite flies", on account of their behaviour of tracking a flying bee or bumblebee, following every of her manoeuvres exactly, just a few centimetres behind. The female fly will follow the bee back to her nest where the fly will lay an egg. The grub will feed on the pollen and nectar collected by the bee for her own offspring, hence the fly's feeding strategy is cleptoparasitism. I found this one very close to a nesting site of Andrena fulva, a solitary mining bee. I suspect this to be host species. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA |
