40 Years Since The End of World War I: WAS THEIR JUBILATION JUSTIFIED? Life in a superior-type trench, somewhere on the Western Front. While one man keeps watch against surprise attack, his comrades - lying in grotesque attitudes - catch a few moments much-needed sleep. Many trenches were merely holes unprotected by any form of support, and barely high enough for a man to crouch in, let alone stand upright! Nederlands: 40 jaar geleden eindigde de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Was hun gejubel gerechtvaardigd? De foto toont het leven in een superieur type loopgraaf ergens aan het westelijk front. Terwijl één man op de uitkijk staat om te waken voor een verrassingsaanval, pakken zijn kameraden, in groteske houdingen liggend, een beetje broodnodige slaap mee. Veel loopgraven waren enkel gaten die door geen enkele vorm van ondersteuning beveiligd waren, en nauwelijks hoog genoeg voor een man om in te hurken, laat staan recht op te staan! De foto is verspreid in november 1958, 40 jaar na de wapenstilstand Datum: 1914-1918 |
