Description
English: The Library of Congress, in Washington, D.C claims to be the largest library in the world, but does not circulate books to the public. It is the research library serving the U.S. Congress and has been located in Washington D.C. since 1800. After the British destroyed much of the library’s collection during the War of 1812 the library bought Thomas Jefferson's entire personal collection of 6,487 books to jump start rebuilding the library. Today, the Library of Congress houses more than 38 million books and other printed materials, 3.6 million recordings, 14 million photographs, 5.5 million maps, 8.1 million pieces of sheet music and 70 million manuscripts, tens of millions of other items.
