Description
English: Built in 1835-1837, this Greek Revival-style building, originally known as the Third Professor’s House was built by Thomas Wade using slave labor to serve as a professor’s house, and was the home of professor and slave owner Francis Lieber, for whom the building is now named from 1835 until 1856. The other half of the building was home to professor and slave owner Stephen Elliott around the same time. The house later was the home of professors James Thornwell and Joseph LeConte. The symmetrical six-bay building features a red flemish bond brick exterior, six-over-six double-hung windows, a side-gable roof, front entrance doors on the second floor with fanlight transoms and decorative sidelights, gabled dormers, fanlight attic windows, and long staircases up to the main entrance doors at the end bays of the building. The building is a contributing structure in the Old Campus District, University of South Carolina Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.
