Description

Pre 1604

Long before Europeans came to this area, the site was wooded and uninhabited. It was known to the aboriginal people who used the river as a canoe route to the interior of the region. We know from Champlain’s map that a Mi’kmaq settlement lay on the east side of the river, towards Hirtles Beach. Another was to be found at Petite Riviera.

This is how it got its name in 1604. When Pierre Du Gua de Monts and Samuel de Champlain left France for Acadie on board Le Don de Dieu, they passed a headland at the mouth of the River Seine called Cap de La Heve. The first land that the travellers saw when they reached the coast was a similar headland which they named Cap de la Have. Champlain’s first map made in Acadia is called “Le Port de La Heve”. It depicts Green Bay and the mouth of the river. The name later spread to the river and to the surrounding area.
