Summary edit

Description

The Holzausen fort was erected under the emperor Commodus (180-192 AD) and survived until the abandonment of the Limes in the year 259/260 AD. The 2nd Treves Cohorts (Cohort II Treveronum) served at the fort's garrison. The name of the approximately 500-man unit has been handed down through several building inscriptions.

The first excavations in the Holzausen fort were conducted in the year 1874 and 1882. According to later excavations, the fort had the form of a rectangle with sides measuring 135.40m and 105.60 in length and rounded corners. It was the smallest Cohort Fort along the Upper Germanic Limes.

Today, the Holzhausen fort is amongst the very best preserved fort along the Limes. Its wall-like enclosure stems from the earthen dam which once bore the defensive parapet. The up to 3m high remnants of the stone wall and buried underneath. The foundation walls of the corner towers and the towers of the fort's four gates are exposed. Their upper stone layer have been reattached during the preservation. Several stone foundations from the headquarters building (principia) are recognisable in the interior, particularly the semi-circular apsis of the standard's shrine. The campaign symbols of the troops were stored here, and one also paid tribute to the emperor and the Roman state gods. The remaining portions of the headquarters building as well as the rest of the buildings in the fort consisted of wood and have not left behind any visible traces.
