Description

Limestone over paleokarstified dolostone in the Mississippian of Kentucky, USA.

The ochre/yellowish-brown colored unit in the lower part of this outcrop is the Renfro Member - it consists principally of very shallow marine/marginal marine dolostones. The upper, brown colored unit consists of limestones of the St. Louis Limestone.

The irregular-shaped hole at left of center is paleokarst. The carbonates of the upper Renfro Member have been partially dissolved away by ancient groundwater action.

Stratigraphy: St. Louis Limestone over Renfro Member (lower Slade Formation), Meramecian, Middle Mississippian

Locality: roadcut along the western side of Route 460, south-southeast of the town of Frenchburg, central Menifee County, eastern Kentucky, USA (37° 56’ 31.07” North latitude, 83° 37’ 12.31” West longitude)
