Summary
editDescriptionLincoln Castle, Lincoln - geograph.org.uk - 864692.jpg |
English: Lincoln Castle, Lincoln Prison Cell - Oakum in Prisons. Prisons typically provided prisoners, under hard labour sentences, the option to walk the treadmill, pick oakum, or break stones. Picking Oakum was very tedious work and was typically performed by slaves, poor house inmates, and prisoners. All rigging on ships was hemp, which wore out in time and had to be replaced. The old hemp rope was chopped into 2ft long strands and untwisted and unpicked until it was reduced to individual fibres. This was then sold on for making string or stuffing mattresses, hence the expression 'Money for old rope'. |
