Español: Escultura pétrea de un león custodio en la entrada este de la plaza de la Merced, Málaga, España. Tras la guerra de Independencia, se puso de moda en España la reproducción de figuras de leones situados de plazas, monumentos, palacios y jardines en su calidad de custodios de esos lugares. El león de la imagen forma parte de un grupo de cuatro situados por parejas en sendas entradas de la plaza, dos en la entrada este y otros dos en la entrada oeste. Dos de ellos aparecen con las fauces abiertas y aire agresivo, mientras los otros dos permanecen en calma y con semblante sosegado. Han sido víctimas de vandalismo a lo largo de los años y han desaparecido algunos originales. Los originales son obra atribuida a José Chinchilla del año 1857. Las reproducciones contemporáneas son obra anónima en mármol blanco del año 1987 y de calidad algo inferior a los originales. |
