Description St. George's Castle is on the highest hill in Lisbon. The oldest parts date from the sixth century A.D. The castle was taken by the Moors when they advanced in Europe, and it was retaken by the Christians in 1147. It became the site of the royal palace in 1255. The hill has been fortified at least since the second century B.C., and inhabited for centuries or millennia before that.
