To the background;
The first Lithuanian society for alcohol temperance was founded in 1846 in the Christian church parishes of Šiauliai and Šiauleniai by the then bishop Motiejus Valančius (1801-1875) after U.S.American pattern. In the following years arose subordinated temperance societies in many Lithuanian towns. The then Russian governor of Vilnius, General Murawjow, prohibit this movement on the 31 of May, 1864, as political coalition for action under treatment of severe punishment. Nevertheless was constituted in 1908 in Kaunas a new temperance society by Lithuanian Catholics. This society was renewed in 1937 as “Union of Lithuania’s Soberness”. Finally, a foundation congress of the “Bishop M. Valancius temperance movement” took place in Vilnius on the 24 of September, 1989. The present envelope should support and commemorate to this anti-alcohol campaign in 1990.
