Summary edit

Description

little bigpod, Astragalus platytropis, Nevada, White Mountains, Sugarloaf, Pinchot Creek - Columbus Salt Marsh drainage, elevation 2662 m (8735 ft).

This distinctive milkvetch is one of my favorites for its outsized, beautifully mottled fruits, pale yellow flowers, and high mountain habitat. The species is limited mostly to the Great Basin of the interior western United States, in exposed rocky places up to 3530 meters (11600 feet) elevation. It has a strong preference for carbonate soils, but can be found on other substrates such as the rhyolite soils here.
