Summary edit
DescriptionLocation of narrow-gauge Solomontown station (centre, where girl is) at Port Pirie ca 1950 (right-hand side of SLSA B 23640).jpg |
English: On the outskirts of Port Pirie, South Australia, this narrow-gauge "station" was established at Solomontown in 1911. It consisted only of a small waiting shelter, a signboard, and a compacted earth footpath where people boarded and alighted (centre, where the girl is).
On the left is the substantial passenger station of Port Pirie Junction. It was built in 1937 to handle traffic on the new broad-gauge and standard-gauge lines, for which a raised island platform was essential. Passengers continued to leave or board narrow-gauge trains at this ground-level area, but the official name "Solomontown" was discontinued. However, public discontent soon resulted in the signboards on the new "Port Pirie Junction" station's platform and on the signal box (centre distance) being supplemented by "Solomontown" underneath. Locals and railwaymen alike continued to use the old name instead of the new one. The railcar and trailer is probably the school train, which proceeded into the hinterland to Gladstone. |
