According to a nearby sign by Sotland's National Reserves the cross, which was carved in granite, is about 1200 years old and probably stood close to a nearby small monastery or chapel. The cross was forgotten, and rediscovered, dug out and brought to Aboyne castle in 1820. 1957 it was returned to Loch Kinord and erected at it's current location.
