English: U.S. Air Force Lockheed F-80A/B Shooting Stars of the 36th Fighter Wing aboard the U.S. Navy escort carrier USS Sicily (CVE-118), circa in August 1948. As a result of the Berlin Blockade and other Cold War tensions in Europe, the 36th Fighter Wing was reassigned to United States Air Forces Europe from Howard Air Force Base, Panama Canal Zone. Sicily loaded the F-80s at Balboa, Panama and ferried them to Glasgow, Scotland (UK), arriving at the King George V dock on 9 August 1948. The aircraft then flew to their new home base, Fürstenfeldbruck in (West) Germany. |
