Title
English: Logging train from the Preston Mill Company, ca. 1925
Description
English:

By the 1920s, most of the forest near Puget Sound had been logged, and the mills had followed the loggers inland towards the Cascade Mountains. At that time, the Preston Mill Company, started in 1896 by Swedish immigrants, was one of the larger mills in King County. This 1920s photo, taken by Clarke Kinsey, shows a railroad locomotive hauling logs through logged-off land to the Preston Mill Company sawmill. Rails connected Preston to Seattle and other area markets. According to historian Clarence Bagley, King County had about 200 sawmills, woodworking factories, and lumber and shingle dealers in the 1920s.
