English: The Chieftain's Grave of Apensen
The Roman cauldron that served as a funerary urn was filled with numerous belongings, cremation remains, and wood coal remnants. The vessel fragments found in the cauldron were largely melted and evidently had contact with the funeral pyre. The inventory included both male belongings (spurs) as well as female belongings (metal fittings for a wooden chest), suggesting that this was a double burial of two members of the Elbe Germanic elite, presumably Lombard. Also included were fragments of vessels that, in the Mediterranean region, were typically used for imbibing wine, such as sieves, dippers, and cups (scyphi). Two metal fittings for the mouthpieces of drinking horns document the consumption of mead.
