Description
English: Architectural fragment from San Salvatore in Brescia
  • Brescia, Province of Brescia, Region Lombardy, Italy

This architectural fragment probably belonged to a wall decorated with icons (iconosthasis) in the monastery church of San Salvatore, which was built in the period from 753-760 by the last Lombard king, Desiderius, who came from Brescia. One of his daughters was a wife of Charlemagne.

The fragment has a high quality, ornamental decorative band of overlapping sickles arranged alongside one another. The sickles arch upward, their ends are rolled inward, and their surface is decorated by a beaded strip. In addition, a leaf-shaped ornament is included between the inward-pointing volutes.

  • Photographed while on display from 22 August 2008 to 11 January 2009 in the exhibition "Die Langobarden. Das Ende der Völkerwanderung" at the Rheinisches LandesMuseum Bonn. On loan from the Museo di Santa Giulia, Brescia.
Deutsch: Architekturfragment aus San Salvatore in Brescia
  • Brescia, Provinz Brescia, Region Lombardia, Italien
