| Description |
A statue of Spencer Compton Cavendish, eighth Duke of Devonshire (1833-1908), on Whitehall in London, England. The Duke of Devonshire held important government offices for 22 years in the period 1863-1903, and was leader of his party in the Unionist governing coalition for several other years in this period, but did not choose to hold office. He was said to have turned down the opportunity to become Prime Minister three times - but it is not clear that any of these chances was realizable. The Duke of Devonshire was one of the richest men in England and a leader in upper class society. I would guess that the statue shows him in the dress and with honors as a Duke. |
