| Description |
English: London Canal Museum Housed in the premises of an ice importer alongside the Battlebridge Basin of the Regent's Canal. Ice was imported in large quantities from Norway before the introduction of refrigeration. It was landed at Limehouse Docks, transshipped into lighters and brought up the Regent's Canal. It would then be distributed by horse and cart to private houses and retail premises. The trade peaked around 1900 and effectively ceased at the First World War, by which time refrigeration was more available. |
