nts to celebrated men, is not unreasonably regarded bythe Knglish as their national Walhalla or Temple of Fame ; and in-terment within its walls is considered the last and greatest honour■which the nation can bestow on the most deserving of her children. The honour has often, however, been conferred on persons nowbelieved to have been scarcely worthy of it, and even on children. The church is in the form of a Latin cross. The much admiredchapel at the E. end is in the Perpendicular style. The other partsof the church, with the exception of the unpleasing and incongruousW. towers by Wren, and a few doubtful Norman remains, are EarlyEnglish. The impression produced by the interior is very striking, owing to the harmony of the proportions, the richness of the colour-ing, and the beauty of the Purbeek marble columns and of the tri-forium. In many respects, however, the efleet is sadly marred byrestorations and by the egregiously bad taste displayed in several of 18. WESTMINSTER ABBEY. 175

In front of thealtar is a curious old mosaic pavement with tasteful arabesques. The fine wood-work of the choir was executed in 1848. The organwas entirely rebuilt by Mr. Hill in 1848, and stands, in varioussections, by the screen between the choir and the nave. The veryelaborate and handsome reredos, which is of quite recent construc-tion. is chiefly composed of red and white alabaster. The largefigures in the niches represent Moses, St. Peter, St. Paul, and Da-vid. The recess above the table contains a fine Venetian glass mo-saic, representing the Last Supper. The Abbey, or, as it is officiallytermed, the Collegiate Church of St. Peter, is now decorated withupwards of 20 stained glass windows. The total length of the church, including the chapel of Henry VII.,is 513 ft.; length of the transept from N. to S., 200 ft. ; breadth ofnave and aisles
