English: Built in 1855, this Greek Revival-style building was designed by Jacob Graves and constructed by William Maybin, using slave labor, and was a project plagued with problems during and after construction, including poor acoustics, which led to it being deemed unsuited for its originally intended purpose as a chapel and assembly hall. The building served as an arsenal and military hospital during the Civil War, and after the war, was converted for use as a gymnasium, laboratory, and the mechanical engineering department. The building takes the form of a Roman temple, with a raised portico on the north facade featuring corinthian columns, a large doorway with a pediment and decorative trim surround, a front pediment with an oxeye attic window and a cornice with dentils, corinthian pilasters flanking the bays on the side facades, doric pilasters on the rear facade, large window bays on the side facades with decorative pediment hoods, and a rear cloister with roman arched arcades. The building saw the addition of a natatorium to the south in the 1930s, which was funded by the New Deal-era Works Progress Administration (WPA), and stands to the rear of the original building on the opposite side of the cloister. The building today is known as the Longstreet Theatre, and since a renovation in 1976, has served as a live performance space.
