Summary edit

Description Lot-8327-1: WWI-Food Preparation. A Kitchen at the Front. In this kitchen, established in the ruins of a house at Blanzy, the cooks were making apple fritters for the evening mess of Company D, 302nd Engineers, which was sheltered in dug-outs just across the street. Blanzy was under vigorous shell fire at the time this picture was taken. Two days later, on September 11, 1918, about 5:30 p.m. just as the “Dixies” were being brought out for the evening mess, a shell burst in the road opposite this kitchen, wounding the mess sergeant, a cook and a kitchen police. 77th Division, Blanzy, September 9, 1918.
