Summary edit

Description Lot-9427-8: Rewards for Three Heroes. Three U.S. Navy flyers who spend 34 days at sea in a small rubber life raft after their plane was forced down during a routine scouting mission, are pictured as they received their reward for their epic experience, which included spearing sharks with a pocket-knife and eating them raw, wringing rainwater from their clothes to drink and staying alive through storms and blazing sun. Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, Commander-in Chief of the Pacific Fleet, reads the commendation which awarded Enlisted Pilot Harold Dixon (to right of pulpit) the Navy Cross, and Gene Adrich and Tony Pastulas (behind him) official commendations. Photograph released March 1942 by Office of War Information. (2015/11/20).
