Summary edit

Description Lot 3124-13: Paintings of Naval Aviation during World War II: Abbott Collection. #87: “The Sluggers”. Artwork by Lawrence Beall Smith. “Aviation armorers break open cases of ammunition, the belts of bullets which feed the insatiable maws of the machine gun of the aircraft carrier’s airplanes. These guns fire from fixed and flexible positions on the airplane, and their power has been sufficient to sink or critically damage enemy destroyers brought within their range of strafing attacks.” (7/10/2015).
