Summary edit

Description Lot 5967-1: U.S. Coast Guard Icebreakers and U.S. Navy Task Group in Arctic Mission. Looking like cracked white frosting on a chocolate cake are these big sheets of ice, as the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Eastwind (WAGB-279) travels through them. The ship’s helicopter hovers near to get this shot of the vessel and the ocean-going tug following close behind during a recent Arctic cruise. Note the huge icebergs in the background. The Coast Guard ice-breakers Eastwind and Northwind (WAGB-282) were among the heavy-duty icebreakers in a Navy Task Group which raced against time during the brief Arctic “summer” on two missions known operationally as NANOOK 52 (supplying icebound weather stations in the Arctic) and SUMAC. Official U.S. Coast Guard Photograph, release September 1952. Photographed through Mylar sleeve. (2015/10/09).
