Summary edit

Description
English: The Louis D. Rekoon House, 316 Allenhurst Road, Amherst, New York, March 2023. Built in 1957, this Modernist-style tri-level residence is a typical, albeit unusually creatively designed and well-preserved, example of the type of houses that were constructed in the middle of the 20th century and marketed to the growing middle- and upper-middle-class population of America's suburbs. The flat roof, angular forms, unmistakable horizontal orientation, and staggered floor levels (note the placement of the three bedrooms above the two-car garage, with the living room and kitchen set atop a slope to their left) are all hallmarks of the style, but easily the most remarkable characteristic of the Rekoon House is the placement of the main entrance and large living room window within a shallow recess, with a cantilevered roof stabilized by a sloping eave and outward extensions of the side exterior walls. Louis David Rekoon (1919-1985) was notable not only as the namesake president of the Rekoon Construction Company but also as a prominent figure in the local Jewish community: he was a founding member of Temple Sinai on Alberta Drive, and served as chairman of Israel Bonds and on the board of the Jewish Center of Greater Buffalo and the United Jewish Fund. He lived in the house with his wife Shirley until his death.
