Summary
editDescriptionLouis Greenstein House, Buffalo, New York - 20221101.jpg |
English: The Louis Greenstein House, 64 Tudor Place at Cleveland Avenue, Buffalo, New York, November 2022. Built in 1925 on part of what had heretofore been the luxurious estate of industrialist John Albright, the Greenstein House is a paragon of the then-trendy Tudor Revival style, sporting a dark ruddy color scheme, a façade of varying compositions (dark red brick on the Tudor Place side contrasting with wavy-edge clapboards and half-timbered yellow plaster in the rear, the latter bedecked with elegant floral reliefs), and a prominent chimney. Look closely and you'll also note decorative masonry work consisting of a pattern of protruding header bricks, a lesser-known but still characteristic hallmark of the style. The house was designed by, and built as the home of, architect Louis Greenstein (1886-1972), a Buffalo native who as a young draftsman cut his teeth with the local practices of McCreary, Wood & Bradney, Green & Wicks, and Edgar Joralemon before attending Columbia University and then setting up his own practice. Aside from his architectural legacy, which prominently includes designs for many area synagogues in reflection of his Jewish faith and was capped off by a term as president of the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects, Greenstein is also notable as designer of Buffalo's city flag and Erie County's official seal. He lived in the house until his death. |
