When a base acts as base, lone pair electrons (the ears in the bunny analogy) bind to a hydrogen ion. When an acid acts as an acid, it loses a bond to a hydrogen but retains the bonding electron pair as lone pair.

Summary

edit
Description
English: This is a metaphor for a weak base (the bunny) accepting a proton (the hat) at lower pH, and donating a proton at higher pH. It illustrates Le Chatelier's principle and the protonation state depending whether the pH is higher or lower than the pKa of the conjugate weak acid (the bunny wearing the hat).
