Description |
English: A depiction of the canine relief from the central discus or medallion of a Roman picture lamp (German: Bildlamp) discovered in 1714 in the Southbroom Hoard near Devizes, Wiltshire, from the figures decorating the margins of Moll's map of "Wilt Shire" (Wiltshire), the seventh in his Set of Fifty New and Correct Maps of England and Wales... Moll copied the figure's appearance and identification from Musgrave's 1719 account of the hoard, misrepresenting it on his map as a statue. Musgrave numbered it as his 12th figure (M12) and identified it with the she-wolf (Latin: lupa) who nursed Romulus and Remus in ancient Roman legend but the children's figures are not apparent in his or Moll's illustration despite being included in the name. The pose is unusual for Roman art concerning the she-wolf and may instead represent a wolf or dog from Celtic or Gallo-Roman mythology or a simple resting domestic dog.
