Summary edit

Description
English: About the Speech:

In his latest book, Luuk Van Middelaar shares his perspective on the dynamics of European integration and the forces shaping the development of the European Union. He maintains that the driver of EU policy is the European Council. Here, EU Member States sit at the same table and try to speak with one voice. When they act together, they are the motor of Europe. However, Member States must also pursue their own national interests. This has produced many tensions, not least the perceived erosion of legitimacy at European level. In this context, and at the start of an important year for the future of the EU, Mr. Van Middelaar discussed the economic, political, foreign policy and legitimacy challenges facing the Union today.

About the Speaker:

Mr. Van Middelaar is an influential Dutch political philosopher. Since early 2010 he has acted as speechwriter and advisor to the President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy. He is author of 'The Passage to Europe: How a Continent Became a Union' which was published in English in 2013.
