In southern Seoul, near the main express bus terminal, there is a neighborhood that, for some reason, is home to many people of French origin. The neighborhood, located in Banpo district, is known as Seorae Village, with the word Seorae (西來) meaning "Coming of the West." And here is an upper grade level school serving the French-speaking students of the neighborhood. It also has postings that also hint to a role as the French community center for Seoul. I have just returned from a week back in Los Angeles. Glad to be back in Seoul, and glad to resume my Seoul routines by alluding to a place I loved in the past - Paris. On a side note, the French can take credit for the Romanized name "Seoul." The French broke it down into two syllables - Sé / oul. The Spanish use the same theory, though under their system the name becomes "Seúl," dropping the O. Under current English-based Romanization schemes, Seoul retains the French style Romanization minus the accent, though the syllable breakdown instead becomes Seo / ul. Under the internationally used (and also used in South Korea 1984-2000) McCune-Reischauer System, the name becomes "Sŏul," but that was almost never used, and "Seoul" has stuck. |
