Description

The Coeducational Humanistic Gymnasium of the Jewish Community in Zamość was a Jewish secondary school with the rights of a state school. It existed in the years 1922-1939. It was located in a building erected in 1921 at 5 Sienkiewicza Street. Originally, a Jewish hospital was to be located there.The first headmaster of the school was the math teacher engineer Iser Borenstein. After him, the school was headed by Rafał Jakubowski, a doctor of law, a Latin teacher. The last headmaster (in the second half of the 1930s) was a Polish philologist, Dr. Bronisław Fruchter, who came to Zamość from Vilnius, where he taught at the Emma Dzięcilska Coeducational (Humanities) Jewish Gymnasium. In the first year of the school's existence, 8 teachers worked there: Olga Chełmicka French teacher; Matylda Borensteinowa Polish language and history teacher; Zygmunt Mannheim teacher of physics, chemistry and nature; Estera Rozenblattówna drawing, calligraphy and handicraft teacher; Jehoszua Grelbiarb a teacher of Hebrew; Justyna Szokerówna Polish teacher; Isaac Totengreber teacher of gymnastics.

In the school year 1930/31, 222 students attended the gymnasium.
