English: Lych Gate, St Mary Magdalene Church, Bolney Traditionally a Lych Gate (from the Old English Lic - Corpse) was the place where the priest waited for the coffin to arrive at church prior to a funeral. The gate not only gave him a place to shelter from the weather but also prayers were said here. This gate, although Victorian, has a rest for the coffin whilst prayers were said. |
