Description

Lycoptera davidi (Sauvage, 1880) fossil fish (6.8 cm long) from the Cretaceous of China.

The Jehol Group of western Liaoning Province, China has produced numerous remarkable fossils, particularly feathered dinosaurs. Shown here is one of the most abundant fossil forms in the Jehol Group - this is a Lycoptera davidi (Sauvage, 1880) fossil fish. It occurs in lacustrine (lake) shales of the Yixian Formation.

Classification: Animalia, Chordata, Vertebrata, Osteichthyes, Actinopterygii, Neopterygii, Teleostei, Osteoglossiformes, Notopteroidei, Lycopteridae

Stratigraphy: Yixian Formation, Jehol Group, near-lowermost Cretaceous.

Locality: western Liaoning Province, northeastern China.
