Summary
editDescriptionLykavittos 1880.png |
English: extracted from a panoramic photo by Bonfils (undated). Estimated date is 1875-80.
Note the Deksameni reservoir on the far right; the beginnings of construction (walls) on Solonos and Skoufa streets (bottom centre of photo); and the absence of the Chapel of St. George at the top of Lykavittos. The ruins of an older chapel were replaced with a new one in 1885. Also there appear to be the very earliest plantings of pine trees -- in comparison with older photos that show no trees at all on the hill. In the Byzantine period, olive trees grew on the slopes. The planting of pine trees began around 1880, and finished in 1915. See, for more info, http://www.athens-greece.us/athens-guide/lycabettus-hill/ |
