The Red Rocks area west of Denver Colorado is on the eastern flanks of the Rocky Mountains and the rocks have been structurally tilted. The stratigraphic succession consists of Upper Paleozoic to Mesozoic-aged sedimentary rocks, unconformably overlying Precambrian basement rocks The sandstones seen here are part of the Permian Lyons Formation - it consists of fluvial to shoreline to nearshore marine deposits. The type locality is at the town of Lyons, north of Denver, Colorado. Stratigraphy: Lyons Sandstone, Permian Locality: roadcut along the northern side of Alameda Parkway (= entrance road to Red Rocks Park), west of Denver, north-central Colorado, USA (39° 40’ 36.15” North latitude, 105° 12’ 00.73” West longitude) |
