Неизвестный художник второй половины XVIII века.

Холст, масло. 128X79 см.

Новочеркасский музей истории донского казачества.

На нижнем брусе надпись: «Собрание портретовъ Донских деятелей. Донской музей. Ефремова Меланья Карповна, жена В. Атамана». На перекладине надпись: «Меланья Карповна, супруга Войскового атамана».

Находился в галерее войсковых атаманов Ефремовского дворца, Старочеркасском женском Ефремовском монастыре; Новочеркасском атаманском дворце, Донском музее.

Меланья Карповна Ефремова — третья жена войскового атамана Степана Даниловича Ефремова. Вероятно, портрет выполнен к знаменитой свадьбе атамана около 1755 года. Легендарная донская красавица обладала сметливостью, недюжинной силой характера. С годами Меланья стала полновластной соправительницей атамана. По семейному преданию, в период следствия над Степаном управляла краем. Память о властной силе атаманши позволила вывесить этот единственный женский портрет в галерее войсковых атаманов в зале Новочеркасского атаманского дворца.
