HEMBA - Masque zoomorphe Singe (Chimpanze) 26.5 cm Appellations locales : « Mwisi Gwa So’o » et « Soko Mutu ».

Face au très riche corpus de la statuaire Hemba, les masques - présents essentiellement dans la région des Hemba orientaux, chez les Mambwe et les Hombe - sont rares. A la modernité de la conception - traits résumés à leurs volumes essentiels, face "en cœur" profondément incurvée - répond la puissance qui lui était conférée. Ce masque de la société initiatique so'o, mi-humain, mi-simiesque, exprime en effet, dans le "sourire" de la bouche démesurée, les traits grimaçants du chimpanzé, considéré par les Hemba comme "un animal féroce, hautement agnostique, voire prédateur des humains" (Blakely in African Arts, vol. 21, n° 1, 1987, p. 32). Il apparaissait lors des funérailles, afin d'illustrer un au-delà chaotique s'opposant au monde ordonné des vivants (idem, p. 36).

Le peuple Hemba vit dans l'est du Congo Rdc, entre le fleuve Lualaba (fleuve Congo), à l'ouest, et le lac Tanganyka, à l'est Leur territoire s'articule autour de la rivière Luika qui délimite les Hemba du nord et ceux du sud. Ils sont donc présents dans le sud de la province du Maniema ainsi que dans le nord de la province du Tanganyka

Ils sont géographiquement et culturellement proches des Luba.

« Mwisi Gwa So’o » & « Soko Mutu » The Hemba live in eastern Congo DRC, between the Lualaba river (Congo river), to the west, and Lake Tanganyka, to the east Their territory is articulated around the Luika river which delimits the Hemba of the north and those of the south. They are therefore present in the south of the province of Maniema as well as in the north of the province of Tanganyka.

They are geographically and culturally close to the Luba
