Description
English: The Bafa Lake, which used to be a part of Aegean Sea, had turned to be a lake as result of geomorphologic development of Great Menderes Delta. First slow transitions—from marine to lagoon—occurred sometime between the later second millennium B.C. and the end of the first millennium, that is, between the Late Bronze Age and the Hellenistic/Roman periods.(1) It is a clear example of ancient human–geographic interactions. The maximum depth of the Bafa Lake reaches to 25 meters. The main water sources of the Bafa Lake are the water floods of Great Menderes (Büyük Menderes) River, and the underground waters coming from the mountains at the environment. The plant cover around lake consists of tamarisks, pine trees, and olive groves. The Bafa Lake shelters the ecosystem characteristics of Great Menderes delta thus providing a winter quarter for more than 300.000 different bird species and also a place for reproduction for many bird species which are threatened with extinction. The main bird species in the Bafa Lake Natural Park are pelican, dwarf cormorant and sea eagle. Herakleia Ancient City site, 40 km from Milas, encompasses large area containing the Athena temple, the Agora, Council Building, Public Bath, Theatre, Nymphaion (fountain building), Endymion Temple, the city walls and various churches due to Bafa being the center of religion.Ref.:(1)https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/gea.21791
