Description
Nederlands: In Burdaard moest lange afstand zwemmer Maarten van der Weijden zijn poging om in 2018 de Elfstedentocht te zwemmen opgeven. Hij was te uitgeput om de laatste stad Dokkum nog te bereiken. Hij had toen al 163 kilometer gezwommen en 55 uur in het water doorgebracht. Hij begon op 18 augustus aan de tocht om zoveel mogelijk geld op te halen voor onderzoek naar kanker. Er werd uiteindelijk een bedrag van 5 miljoen euro’s ingezameld. Op initiatief van dorpsbewoners en met de toezegging van kunstenaar Hans Jouta om het beeld kosteloos te maken, werd dit eerbetoon aan de moedige zwemmer gerealiseerd.
