Description
English: Built in 1940-41, this Art Deco-style building was designed by C. W. Dickey as an administrative office building for the Queen’s Medical Center. Funded by an initiative memorializing the late Mabel Leilani Smyth, the first Director of the Public Nursing Service of the Territory of Hawaii, whom died in 1937, the building served as the headquarters for Hawaii's professional medical and nursing organizations, along with a medical library and air conditioned 346-seat auditorium. The building features an exterior with a green tile hipped roof, concrete cladding, decorative spandrel panels featuring geometrically stylized depictions of the ape (elephant ear) leaf, steel casement windows, broad overhanging eaves, and a terrace on the rear facade, facing the rest of the Queen’s Medical Center. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. In 2000, the building was heavily renovated and modernized under the direction of Aotani and Associates, restoring and retaining the original exterior and carved double doorways on the second floor that depict torch ginger. Today, the building houses administrative offices for Queen’s Medical Center, and the Queen's Conference Center.
