Summary
editDescriptionMach effect sequence.svg |
English: Chronological sequence of the Mach-reflected detonation wave of a 20 kiloton air burst (burst height 540 metres equivalent to a maximized 15 psi or 103 kPa range) at 0.5, 1.25 and 3 seconds after detonation. The blue curve indicates the propagating shock front (refraction due to fireball is neglected here).
Source of the data: Numerical fit of blast equations from the program BLAST.EXE (to be found on Carey Sublette's Nuclear Weapon Archive). The Image has been inspired by a Figure on Glasstone & Dolan (1964; see www.abomb1.org by Gregory Walker).Deutsch: Beschreibung: Chronologischer Ablauf einer 20-Kilotonnen Luftexplosion in 540 Metern Höhe von 0.5 bis 3 Sekunden nach der Zündung.

Additional Info
editThe size and shape of the blast wave is derived by numerical calculations and thus close to reality. In this version also the size of the fireball has been derived from a graph shown in Glasstone & Dolan (1977). However, in reality there will be a distortion and displacement of the fireball due to the passing shock wave and, to a lower degree, also due to the rising of the hot gases. These effects have been neglected here.
